Skilled carpenter, athlete, and outdoorsman
Brady Gilbert, the charismatic, brave, funny, and hardworking father, uncle, and son, encouraged so many with his enduring smile and uplifted outlook. Everyone gravitated to his easy conversation skills while his leadership helped others discover their own purpose. Faith, acquired during recovery, guided him forward as gospel and songs poured from his lips and dwelled in his heart. With warm hugs and unabashed love for his family, he was a compassionate son to his mother Dedi, his father Jeff, his sister Ashley, and his son Cameron.
Quick wit and a curious mind led Brady into multiple professions and hobbies. He may as well have been born with some sporting equipment, a hammer, or a boat key in hand. Brady excelled in school sports, learning quickly as a valued teammate. He attended Lakes Region Community College for marine mechanics so he could not only enjoy free time on the water, but also build a profession on it. He shared his passion for fishing with his son, also, by teaching him. Talented in woodworking and carpentry, he could fabricate anything his imagination dreamed up. From trophy walls for his father’s hunting trophies to house porches, Brady turned lumber and nails into beautiful projects. Even in recovery, he used his talents to lead a team of his peers in beginning a woodworking shop. The cutting boards produced continue to be sold to help benefit the program, and the skills Brady demonstrated gave those around him a sense of pride and accomplishment, as well as career potential outside the program.
When others wanted to quit, Brady was there for inspiration. When the days grew dark for those around him, he was there to brighten their skies. Others’ needs were placed above his own. Those whose lives he touched recall the positive influence of his infectious smile and dedication. Even those who educated him were taught in return. His mother Dedi recalls, “Lots of people reached out to me after Brady’s passing to express how Brady had touched their lives. Brady’s many attempts at recovery taught me to be empathetic, yet strong.”
Brady struggled with the despair and loneliness associated with substance use disorder. He tried not to burden anyone with his struggles, though his family stopped at nothing to help. Fentanyl stole away the tireless craftsman, loving father, and gifted leader before his destiny could be truly realized.
His impact was felt far and wide. “Brady was a great human being who didn’t deserve the life that was dealt to him. His loss is significant and so unnecessary. Substance use disorder kills more than the person suffering with the disease,” Dedi states. Despite the grief, with strength and determination, she continues to share Brady’s story to keep his legacy alive.
Brady’s mother, Dedi Sampson, provided the information for this narrative.
