The Stand-Alone button campaign offers a powerful, accessible way for any group to show allyship and spark meaningful conversations about drug addiction. Wearing a button signals support for individuals and families affected by addiction and reflects the understanding that addiction is a disease — not a moral failing.
The campaign helps normalize open, honest dialogue, which is one of the most important steps in reducing stigma and increasing understanding.
Community organizations, middle and high school students, college groups, first responders, law enforcement agencies, faith communities, and many others have successfully used the button campaign to raise awareness and encourage compassionate, informed conversations around this ongoing public health crisis.
Buttons of people from the state in which you are using the campaign are available if we have had an original exhibition in the state.
In states where there has not yet been an ILP original exhibition, a curated selection of buttons from across the county is available.
The buttons can be used in creative ways, depending on the population you are addressing.

• Display the buttons, have each participant choose one, and ask them to commit to wearing it for a period of time.
• Using the QR code on the back of the button, navigate to the INTO LIGHT website.
▪ Using the search feature enter the first name of the person on the button, click on their portrait to see their narrative.
▪ Read the story of your individual and share it when people ask.
▪ A short “elevator speech” to open the conversation is preferrable to start. Longer conversations can be had if the person who asked is interested.
▪ You can also offer to share the QR code on the back of the button so others can learn more about the INTO LIGHT Project.
* Participants can prepare for conversations by reading the Anti-stigma language guide under the resources tab on the ILP website, so they are confident in using anti-stigmatizing language during their conversations.

Button Quantities: A minimum of 100 buttons is required.
Donations support the work of The INTO LIGHT Project to produce our exhibit, Drug Addiction: Real People, Real Stories. We bring awareness to substance use disorder (SUD) as a brain disease, help to change the conversation about drug addiction, and work to erase the stigma and shame associated with it.
