Loving, joyful, charismatic, and unforgettable
Marquavies, affectionately known as “Qua,” was an energetic, loving, kind, and fascinating man. Full of light, he possessed a huge heart and a contagious smile that instantly made others feel comfortable and valued. Relationships were foundational to Qua, and he formed deep bonds with his close circle and family. His presence was truly unique; people naturally gravitated to his smile and personality. Genuine and courteous, he was always willing to listen and help, instinctively lifting others around him. He would immediately brighten spaces, help others come together, and form lasting communities. Singing, dancing, wrestling, cherishing time with his brother and sister, bonding with his cousins, and playing with his niece and nephew all brought Qua tremendous joy.
Qua loved enjoying life, and for him, friends, family, and music were the best parts of it. He especially loved celebrations that included storytelling and food. With a playful spirit, liveliness, and quick humor, the mood was brighter when he was present. Analytical and tech-savvy, he could fix anything. He was also a gifted athlete, particularly in football and wrestling. Smart and strong, extroverted yet in touch with intimate connections, Qua was the perfect balance.
Qua was focused on his future, exploring opportunities for growth. He aimed to build a meaningful life and experience the world as fully as he could. He dreamed of playing football in college and professionally, as well as working as a peer specialist to help others with addiction. But young adulthood presented many challenges and daunting options, and dangers and temptations soon followed Qua. His goals of establishing independence and navigating adolescence were hindered. In the throes of his substance use disorder, his family faced uncertainty and immense fear. All they could do was provide their support and love in the circumstances. Qua begged and prayed to be saved from this disorder, to regain control and attain salvation. On April 1, 2025, God delivered him to eternal paradise.
In the wake of Qua’s passing, countless souls came forward to share tales of his kindness, support, and helpful nature. Four hundred and fifty mourners, including peers, teachers, and coaches, attended his service. Qua’s mother, Frederica, grieves her son deeply and will never forget his laughter, smile, joyful personality, and voice. While the heartache is everlasting and immeasurable, it has fueled her purpose. The Marquavies Bernard Broughton Foundation, established in his memory, now educates communities, raises awareness, and supports those affected by substance use disorder. Qua’s story is saving lives, especially those at risk of dangers associated with synthetic opioids. His life will continue to have impact and meaning in those who endure, and in the good work of the organization bearing his name. Qua’s soul now finds peace in Heaven, while his family continues to honor him here on Earth.
